Roopville was incorporated in 1885, named for one of the original settlers, Martin Roop. The Roop family was very successful in farming and business and contributed greatly to the development of the Roopville area. Today, Roopville residents are celebrating this heritage as the Roopville City Council and the Roopville Archive and Historical Society partner to restore the old Roop House in downtown. This 1880’s plantation home with its “Steam-boat Gothic” porch railings was constructed by Martin Roop’s son, J. K. Roop, and members of the family continued to occupy the home until the 1990’s. The house will serve as a museum highlighting many furnishings and folk-art representations of the early community, and will be available for community gatherings, weddings and reunions.
Roopville enjoys its peaceful lifestyle surrounded by scenic rural landscape. With little desire to change, the community celebrates its heritage and welcomes visitors to take a step back in time. The annual Roopville Homecoming Festival celebrated every third Saturday of September brings many downtown to enjoy local entertainment and arts and crafts, while also touring the Roop House and the Roopville Archive and Museum housed in the old Roopville Post Office.
